OCTOBER 2005

Ho Wai Piew suffered a heart attack at the New Balance Corporate Triathlon, where he was doing the 750m swim leg, while two colleagues were to complete the 20km cycling race and the 5km run. It was the 40-year-old's first triathlon. An autopsy attributed his death to drowning, heart attack and advanced coronary arterial disease.

MARCH 2006

Colonel Bernard Tan collapsed 600m from the 10km finish line during the Singapore Biathlon, having already completed the 1.5km swim for the event. Emergency medical staff tried to restart the 39-year-old's heart thrice using a defibrillator, but failed to revive him. It was deemed a sudden cardiac death.

JUNE 2007

National triathlete Thaddeus Cheong, 17, collapsed after completing a SEA Games selection trial. He died of heart failure.

AUGUST 2007

Army captain Ho Si Qiu, 25, collapsed shortly after completing the half-marathon at the Singapore Bay Run.

His heart had stopped, and attempts to revive him with resuscitation drugs and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) failed.

AUGUST 2009

Calvin Lee, 42, died while participating in the Osim Singapore International Triathlon. He ran into trouble 90 minutes into the swim leg. Attempts to revive him using CPR and a defibrillator were not successful.

MAY 2011

Lee Khoon Bok, 55, collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest when he was 300m from the 5km finish line of the 100Plus Passion Run.

The event's medical staff, as well as two doctors who were bystanders, applied CPR and also used a defibrillator, but the businessman never regained consciousness.

DECEMBER 2011

Malcolm Sng, 22, collapsed at the finish line after completing the half-marathon event of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore.

A coroner's court later determined that the undergraduate had died from acute coronary insufficiency and had an abnormal coronary artery which was previously undetected.

NOVEMBER 2013

Goh Kai Lin collapsed at the 10km Nike We Run. The 25-year-old taekwondo enthusiast and engineer is believed to have suffered cardiac arrest close to the finish line.

MARCH 2014

Martynn Koh Tong Yong died at the 2XU Compression Run marathon.

The 45-year-old IT professional, who had previously taken part in the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and Sundown Marathon, collapsed near the 11km mark.
