The SEA Games often features unique ball games, giving the event a distinct flavour that sets it apart from other multi-sports extravaganzas like the Olympics or the Asian Games.

This year's Myanmar Games is no different, and it features the sport of chinlone for the first time in the Games' 54-year history. It is the first medal sport to begin at this Games, and Singapore has sent its sepak takraw team to take part in the competition, as the skills required are similar.

Another ball game that is popular in the region is Petanque. While the sport originated in France, it is widely played in Asean countries such as Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
