A tree is stuck by lightning and a mythical baseball bat is born. Even in fiction, the sporting instrument has the smell of legend. In Bernard Malamud's famous book The Natural, the lead character Roy Hobbs - played by Robert Redford in the movie - carves out a baseball bat from a fallen oak tree. Into the bat he etches its name.
