Real use court appeal to contest Copa ban

MADRID • Real Madrid will go to the Spanish courts and continue to fight the decision to throw them out of the Copa del Rey for fielding an ineligible player, Denis Cheryshev, after their appeal against the ban was rejected by the Spanish Football Federation.

The club confirmed that they had lodged an appeal with the Spanish Court for Arbitration in Sport.

LONDON • Rory McIlroy has had laser surgery to correct his vision as he sets his sights on more success next year.

The 26-year-old Northern Irishman posted a picture of himself on Instagram, wearing protective glasses and saying that the procedure went smoothly.

Sheikh Ahmad vows to fight Kuwait jail term

KUWAIT CITY • Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah, one of the most powerful figures in football and the Olympics, has vowed to fight a six-month jail term imposed in Kuwait for insulting the judiciary.

Sheikh Ahmad, a member of the Fifa executive committee and the International Olympic Committee and president of the Olympic Council of Asia, was sentenced to jail by a lower court on Thursday.

Feng leads Dubai field by five strokes

DUBAI • Thai LPGA Tour star Thidapa Suwannapura's six birdies in her last six holes were not enough to stop defending champion Feng Shanshan of China taking a five-shot lead after the third round of the Dubai Ladies Masters yesterday.

World No. 6 Feng shot her third successive round of five-under 67 to total 201. Suwannapura finished with a 65 to move to 206, while France's Jade Schaeffer (70) was in solo third place at 210.
