ABU DHABI (AFP) - France's world No. 357 Gary Stal shocked the quality field at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship on Sunday when he won the US$2.7 million (S$3.6 million) tournament by one shot over world No. 1 Rory McIlroy.

It was an incredible finish to the tournament as three-time champion Martin Kaymer led by as many as 10 shots after five holes, only to make a double and a triple bogey and close with a three-over par 75, which was good only for third place at 17-under par.

The 22-year-old Stal, in only his second year on the European Tour, shot a bogey-free seven-under par 65 to finish on 19-under par, while McIlroy improved to 18-under par with a 66.
