Evan Lysacek remembers vividly the exact moment when he was possessed by a piercing clarity of purpose.

It was at the Palavela indoor arena during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin in Italy. Then 20 years old, he had missed out on a medal by just 1½ points in the men's figure skating finals.
