The inference was barely disguised. Chelsea needed to buy players to win the English Premier League title, Eden Hazard said this week.

The implication was that they needed him more than he needs them. They must spend if he is to sign a contract extension, Hazard feels. Yet if Chelsea have a point to prove to their most gifted individual, the opposite is also the case. Footballers owe the club at Wembley today.
