Not since the late comedian Robin Williams pricked the pomposity of Fifa by parodying Sepp Blatter on stage at the 1994 World Cup draw ceremony in Las Vegas has football been so ridiculed by its attempts to sugarcoat sport with showbiz.

Blatter regarded himself as the Swiss master of ceremonies, and was too full of his own importance to notice that Williams plucked balls out of bowls with a gloved hand before repeatedly handing them to "Mr Bladder".
