Ryu leads LPGA Classic after seven-under 65

LOS ANGELES • South Korean golfer Ryu So Yeon shot seven birdies on a bogey-free card for a seven-under-par 65 on Friday to seize a two-shot lead at the LPGA Classic at Prattville, Alabama.

At nine-under 135, she leads Australian Minjee Lee (70) and American duo Ryann O'Toole (67) and Morgan Pressel (68) at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Loupe edges ahead after final-hole birdie

CHARLOTTE (North Carolina) • A closing birdie in Friday's second round of Wells Fargo Championship gave Andrew Loupe a one-shot lead over fellow American golfer Roberto Castro.

Loupe shot a one-under- par 71 for a eight-under 136 at Quail Hollow as Castro shot 66.

Defending champion and world No. 3 Rory McIlroy closed with back-to-back bogeys for a 69 and was six adrift on 142.

American Zac Blair was disqualified for using a non-conforming club. He had hit himself in the head with his putter in annoyance after missing a putt on the 5th hole and had bent the putter which he then used to hole out. This was in violation of Rule 4-3b.

Tragic death for Ekeng during league match

BUCHAREST • Cameroon international footballer Patrik Ekeng died on Friday after collapsing on the pitch while playing for his Romanian club Dinamo Bucharest.

The 26-year-old midfielder fell to the ground in the 70th minute of Dinamo's league match against Viitorul Constanta and was rushed to the hospital, but staff were unable to resuscitate him.

His death echoes that of his countryman Marc-Vivien Foe, who died of a heart attack during a 2003 Confederations Cup game against Columbia in Lyon, France.

The Romanian Football Federation has postponed all matches this weekend.

Stingrays beat Marlins, reach NSL grand final

Defending champions Sneakers Stingrays advanced to next Saturday's Netball Super League grand final, after beating the Magic Marlins 44-40 in the semi-finals at Toa Payoh Sports Hall yesterday.

Today, the Marlins will play the Blaze Dolphins - 52-45 victors over the Tiger Sharks in the other semi-final - in a play-off for a place in the grand final, while the Mission Mannas face the Fier Orcas to settle the fifth and sixth placings.
