Kompany included but Ciman on standby

BRUSSELS • Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has given Vincent Kompany two weeks to recover from a groin injury in time for the World Cup, retaining the captain in his squad but putting Laurent Ciman on standby.

The four players cut were goalkeeper Matz Sels, defenders Christian Kabasele and Jordan Lukaku and striker Christian Benteke.


Guerrero celebrates reprieve with double

ST GALLEN (Switzerland) • Peru captain Paolo Guerrero, 34, celebrated his reprieve from a doping ban by scoring twice in a 3-0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia on Sunday, three days after being given the all-clear to play in his first World Cup.

He netted Peru's second and third goals after Andre Carrillo had opened the scoring.


Salah upbeat after being named in Egypt squad

CAIRO • Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah was yesterday included in Egypt's World Cup squad despite still underdoing treatment for a shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final, the Egyptian Football Association said.

Salah on Sunday tweeted a picture of himself at the gym and wrote: "Good feelings..."


Injured Bendtner out of Denmark squad

STOCKHOLM • Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner, injured in a Norwegian league game playing for his club Rosenborg, did not make the country's final 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Bendtner, 30, hobbled off the field in tears on May 27 after hurting his thigh playing for Rosenborg. Injured defender Andreas Bjelland also missed out.
