Colombia's Fabra out with ACL injury

MILAN • Colombia full-back Frank Fabra has been ruled out of the World Cup in Russia, the Colombian Football Federation said on Saturday.

Fabra, who was in line to start Colombia's Group H opener against Japan next Tuesday, tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while training with the national squad in Italy. The 27-year-old posted on Instagram that his "heart is broken into 50 million pieces".


Perez called up to replace Lanzini

BUENOS AIRES • River Plate midfielder Enzo Perez was called up to the Argentina national team by coach Jorge Sampaoli on Saturday to replace Manuel Lanzini, 25, whose serious knee injury will keep him out for at least six months.

The 32-year-old Perez, who was part of the 2014 World Cup squad, told TyC Sports channel that he would be "at the orders of the coach" and do his best for his country.


Messi 'stands tall' in Russian town

MOSCOW • Artist Sergey Erofeev has painted a wall mural of Lionel Messi that towers above all those on the main street of Bronnitsy, a town of 20,000 residents some 50km from Moscow.

The huge painting is just a short walk from Argentina's World Cup team base.
