Football: Liverpool need Community Shield as a balm for their pre-season blues

With host of tired returnees and no big-name signing, the rest of the squad need to step up quickly

Liverpool lost thrice last month, three times as many games as they did in last season's Premier League.

The side with the best defensive record then have kept conceding, often in damning fashion. They have gone from almost invincible to inconsistent, from watertight to porous. And yet they have done so in July when a question can be posed: Does it actually matter?
