Not content with the leaps and bounds they have made to rise from world No. 195 in 2006 to their current 116th ranking, the Philippines national team have signalled their intent to achieve a breakthrough in Asian football by securing the services of former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The Sunday Times has learnt that the 70-year-old Swede has signed an initial six-month deal that will see him take charge of the Azkals for the AFF Suzuki Cup next month and the Asian Cup next year, with an option to extend for a longer term.
