We should begin at the beginning. None of us are old enough to go back 125 years to the first Merseyside derby, but today's game at Goodison Park is like a potted history play on all those decades, all that delirium, all the outrageous swings of emotion that fall not very far short of hysteria.

Everton v Liverpool, two clubs literally from the same formation in 1894, was the father of all derbies around the world. And, like their last meeting, won by a bizarre goal in the 96th minute, there is no love lost between the "brothers" on Merseyside.
