His face mask covered his mouth, but there was that distinctive, haunted look in his eyes - as if he had been shouldering the hopes of a nation as he wandered around the crowded Nikolskaya Street.

Lionel Messi's fourth attempt to win his first World Cup came to an untimely end on Saturday, when France beat Argentina 4-3 in the last 16 in Kazan. But surely he had no reason to wander about in Moscow?
