LONDON - Rising English football star Saido Berahino has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, reportedly at speeds of up to 170kmh, on the motorway, British media reported on Tuesday morning.
Police pulled over the 21-year-old West Bromwich Albion striker at 3.39am on the M6, near Lymm in Cheshire, two days after the promising youngster scored against Manchester United during their 2-2 draw in the English Premier League last month.
Berainho was arrested, questioned and released on bail. The charge carries a penalty of up to six months imprisonment, a 5,000-pound (S$10,230) fine and a driving ban for at least one year.
It is not known why the case is being brought up only now.
Berainho, the top-scoring Englishman in the English Premier League with six goals, was included in Roy Hodgson's England squad against Slovenia and Scotland last week, but did not play.
He has recently beeen linked to a big-money January move to Liverpool and Tottenham.
