Football: Singapore to open AFC U-16 C'ship qualifying campaign against Thailand

SINGAPORE - Singapore's Under-15 footballers will kick off the upcoming 2016 AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers against Thailand on Sept 2 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

They will then face DPR Korea on Sept 4 before the final Group H game against Cambodia on Sept 6.

A total of 16 teams will play in the final tournament, to be hosted by India next year. India qualify automatically as hosts but will also compete in the qualifying stage.

The 11 group winners and the four best runners-up from all groups qualify for the final tournament. If India are one of the group winners or best runners-up, the fifth-best runner-up also qualifies for the final tournament.

While Singapore's squad list will be released at a later date, most of the players are set to come from the U-15 side that finished last of four teams at the Lion City Cup last week. They lost 0-3 to Tottenham Hotspur's U-15s before going down 2-3 to the Singapore U-16s.

Tickets, priced at $5 and $10, will be sold online at www.globaltickets.sg and AXS machines island wide from Tuesday (Aug 25) until 4pm on match day.

On-site ticket sales will take place one day before match day from 10am to 5pm at the Jalan Besar Stadium (North Gate).
