SINGAPORE - The National Stadium's sandy pitch has sprouted a sprinkling of hilarious jokes and memes on social media, with many Twitter users using the hashtag "yourpitchissosandy" to jest at the lack of grass growing on the pitch.

The playing field of soccer stars from Japan and Brazil tonight came under scrutiny after its unsatisfactory condition was highlighted in news reports.

The Straits Times rounds up some of the humorous ways in which the hashtag was used.

Some punned on the word sand.

Others made digs at the pitch being more sandy than grassy.

The grass and its poor growth did not get away unscathed either, judging from the comments of user @BadnewsXiaoming.

Well, however sparse the grass may be tonight, the game goes on.
