Football: Free-scoring Tampines stay second in S-League after 3-2 win over Balestier

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers continued their fine scoring form in the S-League when they beat Balestier Khalsa 3-2 on Friday (June 17) at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Stags have now struck 13 times in their last three games under new coach Akbar Nawas.

Strikers Billy Mehmet (6th) and Fazrul Nawaz (43rd, 74th) scored for the Stags while Miroslav Kristic (64th) and Fadli Kamis (90th) replied for Balestier.

Tampines star signing Jermaine Pennant, who set up Mehmet's goal with a corner kick, was taken on early in the first-half as a precaution but the Stags coped well without him on a rain-soaked pitch.

The result saw Tampines, in second, close the gap on leaders Albirex Niigata to four points but the White Swans are still to play Home United in third at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday (June 18).

The Stags will host the table-toppers next Friday at the Jurong West Stadium.

For Balestier, defeat by Tampines ended their three-match unbeaten run as they lie eighth in the standings. The Tigers will next face reigning champions Brunei DPMM, in sixth, at Jalan Besar Stadium next Friday.
