IT WAS heartbreak for Singapore's footballers as they got their Asian Games campaign off to a bad start, losing 0-1 to Tajikistan on Sunday afternoon.

With only three minutes of normal time remaining at the Ansan Wa Stadium in Ansan, South Korea, Tajikistan centre-back Siyovush Asrorov rose highest from a corner to power in a header, past the diving Hassan Sunny.

Singapore came close through a Shahfiq Ghani volley, which stung the palms of the goalkeeper, and Faris Ramli, whose overhead kick in the six-yard box went just wide.

Singapore play Oman on Wednesday in their next Group C match.
