Football: Crystal Palace swoop to sign French defender Marange on free transfer

LONDON (AFP) - English Premier League new boys Crystal Palace have signed French defender Florian Marange on a free transfer from Bordeaux, the south London club announced on Friday.

The 27-year-old, who has signed a one-year deal, subject to Premier League and Football Association clearance, could make his debut in the Eagles' league opener against Tottenham Hotspur at Palace's Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Marange joins Stephen Dobbie, Dwight Gayle, Jerome Thomas, Jose Campana, Kevin Phillips, Elliot Grandin and Marouane Chamakh as one of several signings made by Palace manager Ian Holloway as the club look forward to a first Premier League campaign in eight years.

The left-back, who can also play in central defence, began his career with Bordeaux and made 96 appearances in eight seasons following his 2005 debut.

Former France Under-21 international Marange also had loan spells at Le Havre and Nancy and was a member of the Bordeaux side that won the Coupe de France last season.
