The Canon Lion City Cup kicked off on Saturday night with a thrashing, as the Singapore Under-15 side succumbed 0-7 to their counterparts at Brazilian club Corinthians at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The hosts fell 0-2 behind within the opening 15 minutes of the match, and they crumbled in the second half, conceding five more goals to their physically and technically superior opponents.
The Singapore U-16 side performed much better in the second match of the night against the U-15 side of English Premier League giants Arsenal.
Although they lost 1-2, they at least gave the local fans something to cheer about by scoring a goal and defending stoutly.
The goal was scored by none other than Irfan Fandi, son of local great Fandi Ahmad, who pounced during a goalmouth melee to stab home from close range in the second half.
