Football: Calamitous defending costs LionsXII dear as they lose 1-2 to Kelantan at home

THE LionsXII fell to their first home loss in the Malaysian Super League in almost 20 months on Saturday evening, as 10-man Kelantan came away from the Jalan Besar Stadium with a 2-1 win.

Liberian striker Francis Forkey Doe capitalised on some calamitous defending by the hosts to snatch the winner in stoppage time at the end of the game.

It completed what had seemed an unlikely comeback for the visitors, who fell behind to Khairul Amri's sweetly-struck volley in the 26th minute that flew past goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

But in the first of two defensive mix-ups that would ultimately cost them dear, LionsXII goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud was left exposed by his backline and Ahmad Fakri Saarani was allowed to roll the ball into an unguarded net.

Kelantan's Ahmad Shakir Ali received his marching orders 11 minutes from the end for kicking out at Afiq Yunos but even with the numerical advantage, the LionsXII were made to pay for their lapses in concentration.
