National athletes will soon get to tap into a new $40 million fund to help them achieve success on the international stage.
The first recipients of the Sports Excellence Scholarship, a support system funded by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, are expected to be announced in the next few months.
Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Teo Ser Luck, who is also serving as the chairman of the scholarship selection committee, said that the athletes will be selected based on their performances on the international stage and their ability to inspire.
Mr Teo, who heads the 11-member committee, also added that they would be inclusive in their selection to take into account other smaller sports. So far, the committee has received 218 nominations across 28 sports. Mr Teo added that about 60 athletes will be chosen to benefit from the scheme.
