Cubs face tough draws in 25th Canon Lion City Cup

Facing some of the best young players in the world, Singapore's Under-15 and Under-16 teams will tackle very different styles of football in next month's Canon Lion City Cup.

At the draw made this morning, the Singapore Under-16s, coached by former national defender Robin Chitrakar, will take on the youngsters from Arsenal and Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt in what promises to be a physical battle in Group A.

In Group B, the Singapore Under-15s, coached by former Lions captain Nazri Nasir, will face the slick passing style of PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands and Brazil's Corinthians.

The tournament will kick-off on June 8 and the final will be played on June 16. All matches will be held at Jalan Besar Stadium.

This year marks the 25th edition of the Lion City Cup. It was started in 1977 as the first Under-16 football tournament in the world. The competition is where a young Fandi Ahmad, who went on to become one of the country's best players, first emerged.

Fandi's oldest son, Irfan, now training with Spanish club Hercules, will return to play for the Under-16s.
