MANCHESTER (AFP) - England were 211 for four in reply to Australia's first innings 527 for seven declared, a deficit of 316 runs and still needing a further 117 runs to avoid the follow-on, at tea on the third day of the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Kevin Pietersen was 78 not out and Ian Bell 51 not out.
Ashes-holders England lead the five-match series 2-0.
