Chess fans got more than what they bargained for as round one of the Fide World Championship flagged off on Nov 25 at the Resorts World Sentosa.

So much of the chatter ahead of the blockbuster clash between China’s defending champion Ding Liren and Indian challenger Gukesh Dommaraju was focused on the former’s recent slump and mental health issues. Many predicted that it would be a bloodbath, given Gukesh’s rise in the chess world and form book.
