The first day of the inaugural Global Esports Games (GEG) saw its youngest competitor crowned champion as Joao Victor "CSC_JVictor" Lopes, 17, took home the eFootball 2022 title.
The Brazilian was unfazed by his older opponents and stunned eFootball.Open world champion Ivan Pablo Melian "MelianTheKing" 2-0 in the best-of-three grand final at the Resorts World Convention Centre.
Both picked Bayern Munich as their teams but it was Victor, a two-time all Brazil eFootball champion, who adapted better against his Argentinian opponent, 20.
Earlier, he scored 2-0 wins over Vietnam's Le Doan Thanh Tam "Figo" and Singapore's Dennis Zhao "DENNISZZ0910" in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
Singapore also secured a medal at the GEG yesterday as Tay "Merody" Hui Chun, Amanda "bings" Lim, Paula "xiaoma" Teo, Ho "KazeL" Sheng Ying and Joanne "Minkiey" Lim made it to the Dota 2 women's grand final.
Singapore, Britain, Paraguay and Mongolia had qualified for the two-day GEG through the national/territory selections and regional qualifiers, which concluded last month.
The Republic and Britain had recorded 2-0 wins over Paraguay and Mongolia respectively in the semi-finals to book their spots in yesterday's grand final. The final results were not available at press time.
The Dota 2 Open category and Street Fighter V: Champions Edition will feature at the GEG today.
More than 100 athletes from more than 50 countries and territories are competing this weekend.
Also ending today is the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) M3 World Championship at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The US$800,000 (S$1.1 million) event, which began on Dec 6, is the first international e-sports competition in Singapore to allow a live audience since the pandemic began.
