Bowling: Joy Yap wins girls' singles gold at Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling C'ships

SINGAPORE bowler Joy Yap won the Republic's first gold medal at the 15th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships in Jakarta, winning the girls' singles event by one pinfall on Thursday.

She bowled a perfect 300 pinfalls in her fourth game to surge into the lead, and then withstood the charge of Japan's Futaba Imai to win the gold with 1,446 pinfalls.

"I didn't really have a good start but after I settled down, I managed to roll a big game to stay in touch," said the 18-year-old Republic Polytechnic student.

"The 300 really boosted my confidence and steadied my early nerves and I was able to fire another big game in the fifth game. The last few frames were tense but I managed to pull through, thanks to the encouragements given to me by the coaches."
