Berlin considers bidding for 2024 Olympics

BERLIN (AFP) - Germany's capital Berlin is considering bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games, the city's mayor Klaus Wowereit said on Wednesday.

"Berlin meets the requirements to host the Olympic games, all the sports facilities are already in place," Mr Wowereit said.

Any bid by the capital would need to be backed by German's top sports bodies and receive support from the local population.

Last November, the city of Munich rejected a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in a referendum.

Mr Wowereit has said he would not embark on bringing an Olympics to Berlin at any cost.

For Berlin to be successful, the first step would be for their application to be put forward by the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) to the International Olympic Committee in November 2015.

The awarding of the 2024 Summer Olympics will be made at the IOC's session in 2017.

Germany has not hosted a Olympics since the tragedy-hit 1972 summer games in Munich, while Berlin hosted the 1936 edition under Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.
