Beach volleyball: FIVB World Tour Singapore to feature 126 teams from 32 countries

SINGAPORE - Beach volleyball fans here can expect four days crammed with action in next month's Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour Singapore tournament.

Organisers Volleyball Association of Singapore (VAS) announced on Wednesday (May 30) that 126 teams across both genders from 32 countries have signed up for the from June 21-24 event to be held on Sentosa's Siloso Beach.

Canadian twin sisters Nicole and Megan McNamara are among a number of talented duos expected for the US$50,000 (S$67,144) event.

The 20-year-olds had led the University of California in Los Angeles to its first National Collegiate Athletic Association beach volleyball title on May 6 and two days later made their professional debut at the FIVB World Tour event in Bangkok, finishing fourth.

Brazilians Josi Alves and Lili Maestrini will be the highest-ranked women's pair here at world No. 42, while Dhita Juliana and Putu Utami, and Jess Grimson and Victoria Palmer - the top ranked pairs from Indonesia (60th) and England (85th) respectively - have also signed up.

Singaporean duo Lau Ee Shan and Ong Wei Yu, last seen in action during April's Commonwealth Games, are due to compete as well.

The FIVB World Tour is a year-long series that runs from September to August similar in format to tennis' pro circuits.

The 41 events this year are broken into five tiers, from one-star (lowest) to five-star respectively. The Singapore stop is a two-star event.

Pool play will take place over the first two days, with the second round and quarter-finals on June 23 and the semi-finals and finals on June 24. Tickets for each day cost $20 and are available at Sistic's website.

There will also be a range of lifestyle events for fans during the tournament, including music festivals and night parties.
