Harper to coach youth players in Singapore

Five-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Ron Harper will be joining the inaugural Junior NBA Singapore 2016 National Training Camp this weekend.

The former shooting guard will coach 200 boys and girls aged 10 to 14 at the OCBC Arena from Friday to Sunday.

At the end of the camp, 10 boys and five girls will be named Junior NBA Singapore All-Stars, and earn a chance to participate in an overseas NBA event with other Junior NBA All-Stars from South-east Asia later this year.

Harper, who won three titles with the Chicago Bulls (1996-98) and two with the Los Angeles Lakers (2000 and 2001), said: "These young athletes have worked very hard to get to this point and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with them so they can take their game to the next level."

The 52-year-old will also be meeting basketball fans at clinics and community events.

The Junior NBA programme is also held in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Apart from coaching children in the fundamentals of basketball, the programme also aims to impart values such as sportsmanship and teamwork.

It is presented by the ActiveSG Basketball Academy, which offers coaching for children from five to 14 years old.

Said ActiveSG chief Lai Chin Kwang: "We are excited to continue exploring new ways of coaching that will enable the ActiveSG Basketball Academy to bring new value to the basketball community in Singapore."
