SINGAPORE - Riding on the launches of the ActiveSG Football Academy and Athletics Club last month, national fitness movement ActiveSG announced the introduction of its Basketball Academy on Sunday (May 29) at Connaught Drive.

The launch, which happened on the sidelines of the Families for Life Celebrations in the May edition of Car Free Sundays SG, also saw a Singapore record set for the most number of people dribbling a basketball in five minutes with 2,180 people getting in on the act.

A tripartite partnership between Sport Singapore, Basketball Association of Singapore and 2016 Asean Basketball League finalists Singapore Slingers, the ActiveSG Basketball Academy will serve as a pathway for children and youths to develop their talent and nurture their passion for the sport.

Former national head coach and current Slingers boss Neo Beng Siang, who will lead the academy as its principal, said: "I am looking forward to sharing my experience and working with the team to create an academy where those who have undergone the training can develop the correct attitude and sustain their own passion for the sport.

"Who knows, we might one day have an upcoming international basketball star in our midst."

Suitable for both boys and girls aged 5 to 14 years old, the academy programme will be priced at $130 and thrice weekly sessions will be conducted over 10 weeks. Working adults will be offered leagues and locations to play at a recreational level, regardless of their skill level or club affiliation.

Commencing in September, the ActiveSG Basketball Academy will have sessions conducted in five centres islandwide - Choa Chu Kang Sports Centre, Clementi Sports Centre, Delta Sports Centre, Hougang Sports Centre and Pasir Ris Sports Centre.
