Badminton: World champion Carolina Marin withdraws from OUE Singapore Open

Reigning world badminton champion and newly-crowned All-England women's singles champion Carolina Marin has withdrawn from the OUE Singapore Open, giving the April 7-12 tournament a miss. No reason was given for her withdrawal.

The world No. 4 stunned China's Li Xuerui at the world championships last year to become the first Spaniard to take the world title. Earlier this month, she beat India's Saina Nehwal at the prestigious All-England Championships to win her first SuperSeries event.

The annual badminton tournament will still feature some of the sport's best players, including the world's top two men's singles players,Chen Long of China and Denmark's Jan O Jorgensen, and world No. 4 K. Srikanth of India.

World No. 2 Nehwal is also slated to be here, as is China's world No. 3 Wang Shixian and 2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.

The US$300,000 (S$417,000) event will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets are available from SportsHubTix.
