AYG: Shooter Martina wins S'pore's 1st medal

MARTINA Veloso won Singapore's first medal at the Asian Youth Games, with a bronze in the girls' 10m air rifle event in Nanjing on Sunday.

The Secondary 2 Singapore Sports School student, who picked up the sport only a year ago, shot 185.2 in the final after qualifying fifth with 409.8. But her fellow Singaporean Leona Yeo faded to fifth with 142.3 in the final, despite qualfiying second.

China's He Zichao (205.3) won the gold and South Korea's Kim Je Hee (203.9) finished second.

At the end of the second day of competition, which ends on Aug 24, the hosts lead the medal tally with seven golds, three silvers and four bronzes, with North Korea second on four golds and two bronzes.
