Australia v India: A summer in search of heroes

In a small museum in the middle-aged brain lies a part of our unforgotten youth. Stuff we'll carry smiling to our graves. Sentences from John Steinbeck, Mick Jagger in full strut, Maradona flooring the English and of course Richie Benaud's voice from Australia. He was the cool of summer, all pithy wisdom, fine skill and studied silences.

It's what we'd like from this cricketing season as India visit Australia, a summer hopefully of expression but not much posturing, a contest with passion but also manners. Let's play, not prattle on. Let the game speak. Let the media, too often provocateurs themselves, stay out of the duel. Let there be immediate incarceration for the first one to say, "We know where to draw the line".
