Athletics: Shanti Pereira clocks 11.89sec to rewrite national women's 100m record

National sprinter Shanti Pereira is now the fastest woman over 100m in Singapore, after clocking 11.89sec at the World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Her timing eclipses the 12.01 that Amanda Choo set in 2010. Shanti, 16, will compete in the semi-finals of the event on Thursday.

The Republic Polytechnic student had come within 0.04 of the mark just this March, and is also just 0.06 off Prema Govindan's 200m record of 24.54, set in 1984. Shanti will race in the 200m on Friday.

A team of nine are representing Singapore at the biennial meet, the biggest team the Republic have fielded so far for the championships.
