Athletica last night stepped up on his last-start impressive second in a fast-run 1,600m race on turf with a stylish victory, despite being a little tardy to jump.

The four-year-old New Zealand-bred's second to Centenary Diamond, who won in 1min 34.81sec on March 3, was a good gauge that the mile was an ideal trip. That was why punters zeroed in on the Shane Baertschiger-trained horse to $12 favouritism in the $50,000 Class 4 event over the Polytrack 1,600m.
