American needs win badly in bid to be top welterweight after shocker against Masvidal

Ben Askren, in a red T-shirt, jeans and flip flops, is reclining in a chair in a ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. And he laments that he is in purgatory.

He is referring not to the luxurious settings but his status in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the world's premier mixed martial arts (MMA) organisation.
