Asean Para Games: Vietnam's Nguyen, Le power their way to lifting golds

SINGAPORE - Vietnam's male powerlifters kicked off the Asean Para Games powerlifting competition in style, winning the first two gold medals on offer at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre Hall B on Saturday morning.

 Nguyen Binh An emerged victorious with a best lift of 175kg in the men's up to 54kg, finishing ahead of Thailand's Sukjareen Choochat (150kg) and Pongsao Amorntep (123kg).

Compatriot Le Van Cong won the men's up to 49kg with a best lift of 178kg, beating Laos' Pia Pia (125kg) and Thailand's Motnok Khlaeo (110kg).

Both managed to break their own Games records of 170kg and 176kg respectively, though they stopped short of their Asian records.

The women's up to 41kg and up to 45kg events will take place later in the afternoon.
