Asean Para Games: Malaysia's top cycling contenders injured in hit and run accident while training

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A head coach and four Paralympian cyclists suffered multiple injuries after they were hit by a four-wheel drive while training along the Latar Highway near Batu Arang, Selangor on Thursday (Sept 7).

Malaysia's national cycling coach Johari Nayan was training with his para cycling team of Mohd Nor Rizuan Zainal, 31; Khairul Azwan Wahab, 25; Nur Syafiq Suhaimy, 19; and Khairul Nizam Mohd Ali, 23, when a four-wheel drive rammed into them at about 10.50am on Thursday.

The four are believed to have been in training for the Asean Para Games (APG), which takes place in the Malaysian capital from Sept 17-23

According to the New Straits Times, Paralympians Rizuan and Khairul are potential gold medallists at the APG.

Kuala Selangor OCPD Supt Ruslan Abdullah said the victims suffered multiple injuries from the hit and run accident, and were sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

"The driver of the four-wheel drive fled the scene," he said. "We are in the midst of tracing the vehicle and its driver."

He urged anyone with information to contact the police as soon as possible.
