Oct 16 is the 50th anniversary of the Black Power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the Olympic podium during the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

That, and National Football League quarter-back Colin Kaepernick "taking the knee" during the national anthem two years ago, are regarded, wrongly, as the most potent demonstrations in the sports arena of America's civil rights struggle.
