Tan Kai Rui's participation in the 5km category of The Straits Times Run is his first time tackling such a long distance, and the 11-year-old will be aided in his quest by a new pair of New Balance shoes.
He was one of 10 ST Run participants who won a pair of Fresh Foam Zante v4 Breathe Pack shoes worth $169 for signing up before June 3. The shoes were sponsored by New Balance.
The Primary 5 pupil from Tao Nan School said he chose to accompany his father in the 5km race "as a form of bonding". The pair regularly jog 2km at East Coast Park, and Kai Rui admitted he is nervous at the prospect of participating in the race at the Sept 23 event.
He added: "Five kilometres is quite a long distance for me, so I'm not sure if I can get through it. My father will say (I) have to hit a consistent speed and take deep breaths when running out of energy."
Executive Loh Chen Lin, who has participated in four previous editions of the ST Run with her husband Teo Beo Khoon, revealed that she had initially been suspicious upon receiving the e-mail notifying her that she had won a pair of shoes.
"I thought it was a scam, and I was shocked that I got the shoes, but I'll give them a try," added the 41-year-old, who will participate in the 10km race.
Returning participant Lina Lim, who has signed up for her third ST Run, also received a pair of New Balance shoes.
The 51-year-old manager is looking forward to wearing them during the 18.45km race, saying that she has been wearing New Balance shoes as she prefers the wider cut.
Of the ST Run which ends at the National Stadium, she said: "It's quite enjoyable, as it's fun and after you finish there's an event with games as well."
Kai Rui also has his post-race plans settled: "I'll tell my mother and sister to join next year."
For the next giveaway, participants who sign up for the ST Run before July 8 will stand to win a iZest Back Zen worth $499, sponsored by Mobot. There are 20 sets to be given away.
