SINGAPORE - Parade-goers can look forward to savouring popular salted egg snacks from homegrown snack maker The Golden Duck.

To celebrate the nation's birthday, the local startup produced more than 100,000 commemorative packets of its Salted Egg Yolk Potato Crisps and Salted Egg Yolk Fish Skin Crisps for the National Day Parade (NDP) funpacks.

The limited edition commemorative packet weighs 25g and sports a sketch of Singapore's landmarks such as the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer. The packaging was designed by The Golden Duck's co-founder and owner Jonathan Shen, 28, who also designed the company's original retail packaging which features a sketch of an old market.

Mr Shen said: "The sketch of the old market on our retail packs reflects the heritage flavour of our snacks. For our commemorative snack packing, we selected a sketch of Singapore's modern skyline with its iconic landmarks to mark the occasion and depict how far the nation has come."

This is the first time that The Golden Duck's products are featured in the NDP funpack. Mr Shen and his co-founder Christopher Hwang, 25, set up the company two years ago.

Mr Shen said: "We are proud to be part of the nation's celebrations as our company is a Singaporean startup which has grown through the support and love that our fellow Singaporeans have been showing our snacks.

"Our snacks have since reached other shores, but we will always remember our roots and where we come from. Singapore is home and that's what it means to us."

The Golden Duck recently launched its products in the Philippines and Hong Kong. It plans to expand its presence in the region.

The company's name reflects its signature salted egg flavour derived from duck eggs and the Asian heritage of its gourmet snacks. Gold is symbolic of wealth and reflects the company's premium-priced products.

To fulfill the required number of commemorative packets for the NDP funpacks, Mr Shen and Mr Hwang increased the production capacity of their factories. Mr Hwang made a trip to Shanghai to acquire new customised machinery to produce the special-sized packs.

The Golden Duck, which currently has 52 full-time staff, put in over 1,000 man hours and used three tonnes worth of potatoes and fish skins (enough to fill one freight container) to produce the commemorative packets which are exclusively packed for NDP and not available for sale.

The standard retail packets (125g) are available at all 7-Eleven stores and selected Cold Storage outlets.
