Woman stole $25,000 worth of valuables, cash from lockers at gym

A woman who stole about $25,000 in cash and valuables from 16 women at True Yoga was jailed for 12 weeks on Thursday.

Kerk Leng Chair, 44, unemployed, had pleaded guilty to eight charges of theft of property from the lockers of the patrons at True Yoga at Pacific Plaza, Scotts Road, and Ocean Financial Centre in Collyer Quay between March and June last year.

She had worked there as a physical therapist for two years before she left. She then joined as a member and committed the offences during almost a year-long period, stealing cash and items worth $80 to $8,300.

Kerk has made full restitution. Six other similar charges were considered during her sentencing.

A government psychiatrist said it was likely that Kerk, who is twice-divorced, stole for comfort because of her mild depressive disorder. As for her third husband, he said she had significant and serious communication difficulties with him, and he had neglected her for the past five to six years.

She could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined on each charge.
