A woman who hit a singer on the temple with a decanter was given one week's jail on Thursday.

Crystal Liew Shu Hui, 23, was ordered to pay $5,000 to the victim, Ms Rod In Yuvana, 33, a Thai national, as compensation. She admitted to using a decanter to hit the victim around the left temple between midnight and 4.11am at Neverland Thai Disco at Orchard Plaza, Orchard Road, on Dec 17, 2011.

A district court heard that Liew and her five friends were drinking and chatting at the disco where Ms Yuvana was performing.

About two hours later, Ms Yuvana came and sat next to Liew's friend, Amanda, and tried to speak to her, but Amanda was busy talking and did not pay any attention to the victim.

Angered, the victim scolded Amanda, picked up a decanter and splashed water on Amanda's face.

On seeing this, Liew and another friend began to laugh.

The victim asked what they were laughing at. She then splashed water from the decanter at Liew and her friend, causing both to get wet.

Liew became angry and hit the victim with the decanter, causing her to bleed.

The victim was sent to Raffles Medical Centre where she underwent emergency surgery. She was given 14 days' medical leave and with her facial wounds, was unable to continue her work as a professional singer.

Liew, who could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000, was allowed to defer sentence until Sept 30. She is released on $10,000 bail.
