SINGAPORE - Will United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hold their historic June 12 summit at a Singapore hotel?

More than a third of those polled by The Straits Times appear to think so, with the other options being the Singapore Botanic Gardens, National Gallery Singapore and Gardens by the Bay.

A total of 1,139 votes have been cast in ST's online poll as of Thursday noon (May 31), after it kicked off on Wednesday evening.

Readers can also suggest their own locations. Some wild guesses include Yishun, Pulau Tekong and the Internet's favourite - Peace Centre.

While Mr Trump confirmed early this month that Singapore would play host, the exact location of the summit remains shrouded in mystery.

About 37 per cent polled - or 419 people - believe that the highly anticipated meeting would be held at a hotel.

Experts had flagged the Shangri-La Hotel and Marina Bay Sands as possible options.

Shangri-La Hotel, which hosts the annual high-level Shangri-La security dialogue, would have the know-how in terms of logistics and security, they said.

On the other hand, MBS is owned by Las Vegas Sands Corp, whose chairman and chief executive is Mr Sheldon Adelson, one of Mr Trump's major donors.

Sentosa could also be an option for its relative privacy and seclusion.

An American delegation led by White House deputy chief of staff for operations Joe Hagin is believed to be staying at the Capella Hotel in Sentosa, as high-level preparation talks are under way.

On Wednesday, Mr Kim Jong Un's top aide Kim Chang Son was spotted for a few hours at the hotel, where he is likely to have met Mr Hagin.

Mr Kim flew into Singapore on Monday night and is believed to be staying at The Fullerton Hotel.

Sources say Mr Trump could also be staying at the Capella, and Mr Kim Jong Un at The Fullerton.

Already, several hotels have blocked off a number of rooms during the period in preparation for a jump in visitors, including foreign journalists.

Meanwhile, about 13 per cent or 154 people polled believe that the summit could take place against the backdrop of the iconic Supertrees at the Gardens by the Bay.

There were 134 people - or just over 10 per cent - who chose the National Gallery and 122 - or 12 per cent - who picked the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

About 300 people had differing opinions and selected "others" in the online poll.

Popular answers in this category include the Istana (93), Yishun (23) and the islands of Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin.

Early this month, an edited photo of Mr Trump and Mr Kim sharing a handshake outside the Peace Centre in Dhoby Ghaut was posted online, tickling many on the Internet.

Though unlikely, 10 people in the ST poll are hopeful that it might just be the venue of choice.
