What people steal from supermarkets may surprise you

SINGAPORE - Milk powder, abalone, liquor and razor blades are the favourite targets of supermarket shoplifters, according to major chains.

And culprits seem undeterred by size.

Dairy Farm, which runs the Cold Storage, Giant, Jasons and Market Place supermarkets, said the most expensive item it has seen vanish is an electric scooter priced at over $800.

A $250 bottle of premium vinegar was also nicked from one of its stores earlier this year.

With the theft of such items proving potentially costly, supermarkets have ramped up security measures in recent years to clamp down on shoplifting.
