As relief taxi driver Toh Weng Yap, 62, was walking home along Telok Blangah Heights at noon yesterday, he noticed a road in the area was closed.

"I went home and, later, I heard a loud sound like thunder," he said. The noise came from the detonation of a war relic, a fused and fired 50kg World War II aerial bomb, at a construction site in Telok Blangah Street 31 just down the road from Mr Toh's home.

Police said they received a call at 7pm on Wednesday about the incident.

The Singapore Armed Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was activated and worked through the night to dispose of the relic. It was detonated around 1.20pm the next day.

The army said in a Facebook post yesterday that the relic had to be disposed onsite and posted a video of the process.

No danger was posed to the public, but work was halted at the worksite. On Monday, the EOD unit was activated twice in the night to defuse two World War II relics found at construction sites in Bukit Timah and Novena.
