SINGAPORE - The first inkling that something had changed was at the wet market near my flat in Bedok North: The orange netting was gone.

The sudden absence of the tatty improvised fence made me realise how depressingly ugly it had been - it made the wet market and hawker centre look like a Christmas present wrapped by a small, clumsy child.
